The social media giant Twitter is in the process of giving funds to a team for the development of a decentralized and open standard for social media. The CEO of Twitter Jock Dorsey has announced this effort which is known by the name of Bluesky. Through a series of tweets he has said that Twitter is going to fund a small team which is going to be independent and is going to contain as many as five engineers, designers and architects and this platform is going to only provide a single direction which is the finding of an existing standard that is decentralized and advance with it or go ahead and create this standard from the very scratch.
Twitter is going to eventually hope to act as a client for this new standard. Dorsey has further explained that Twitter had again been more open however it has become very centralized. This is going to cause a few problems like making it tough for the enforcement of global policies and addressing misinformation and abuse.
Dorsey has also written that the value of the social media has seen a shift away from the hosting of content and its removal to the algorithms which recommend through the direction of someone’s attention as per Dorsey in one series of tweets. He says that these algorithms as of now are proprietary usually and there is no option yet for choosing or building the alternatives.
Dorsey has noted that the recent technologies such as block chain have made it possible for a decentralized approach to be more viable in the present scenario.
The process as per Dorsey is going to take many years for its development
